Circle to meet in the French countryside 30 June to 1 July, 2007.

The subject for debate the next meeting of the Circle will be Secularism, Ethics and Politics. While confronted with enormous challenges, including the rise of global forces and global threats, Nations-States built upon liberal principles have problems of legitimacy. Politics and politicians are often seen with skepticism and even contempt. Ethics and moral principles are invoked to justify policies. And, here and there, a bewildered citizenry is tempted by various forms of authoritarianism and fundamentalism. In Candles in the Dark: A New Spirit for a Plural World, Richard Falk called for a “reconstructed secularism” that would provide “space for spiritual and normative creativity” and resurrect spirituality understood as a “reaffirmation of belief in the mystery of life and the sacred character of the created world.” Such markers for a renaissance of the public spirit and its practical implications for life in society and harmony with the environment will be explored during this informal gathering.

An agenda and programme of work is expected to be posted by the end of April. Should you wish to share your views on the subject prior to the meeting, or to draw our attention on some source of reflection, please feel free to do so and send them to Triglavcircle@charter.net.

Meeting held at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, 19-20 January 2007

A meeting of the Triglav Circle took place on 19-20 of January 2007. The venue was in Cambridge, at Harvard University. The subject was the issue of “work and employment: their meaning for human dignity and characteristics in a changing world.” The rationale for this choice was that employment is the substantive theme of the meeting of the United Nations Commission for Social Development, 7-16 February 2007. The goal of full employment was one of the three main commitments made by the Social Summit in Copenhagen. More recently, the International Labour Organization has developed with some success the notion of “decent work.

As is the general practice, this meeting was open to all members of the Triglav Circle and, as usual, to a few invited guests.
